Welcome to the Homepage of Alexander Schatten. I am senior researcher at Vienna University of Technology, Institute for
Software Technology and Interactive Systems.
I am also a freelance IT-consultant (Software-Engineering and architecture, project management, Open Source systems,

[2010-02-01] Updated all Indonesia Photos
As a first step in updating my photo-section, I updated all Indonesia photos. This included rework of some older
pictures, removal of not so good photos, resizing them to larger size and finally adding some new destinations like

[2009-10-28] Diploma Thesis by Markus Niederer is Online: Meeting Scheduling
Markus Niederer finished his excellent diploma thesis "Meeting Scheduling Support using Mobile Clients". In his
thesis Markus discusses different strategies to do meeting scheduling and analysis drawbacks of conventional
systems. Eventually he suggests new open protocols and developed a mobile client for the Android platform which
participated with good success in the first Google Android challenge. We also wrote a conference paper together.

[2009-10-14] Larger Update and Refactoring of Website under way
In the last days I reviewed large parts of my website and did significant refactorings, e.g. in the CV,
Software, added (forgotten) thesis downloads, publications, welcome-text and so on. Please stay tuned. The next

[2009-10-01] Presentation and Paper from KORSD conference is online
Today I had my keynote-lecture at KORSD conference. My talk was after the excellent talk from Prof. Alan Belward
which did not make it easier. However, I think it worked out fine. I had a lot of questions and discussions
afterwards. The paper and the presentation are now online available.

[2009-01-30] Volles Haus! Informatiktag für Informatik-Lehrerinnen und Lehrer
Heute fand der erste Informatiktag für Informatik-Lehrerinnen und Lehrer statt. Wir alle waren vom Interesse
überrascht: der Böckl-Saal war voll; viele mussten vor oder in der Tür zuhören. Ich durfte den ersten Vortrag
zum Thema "Sustainability and ICT" halten. Das Feedback war, denke ich, sehr gut, und die Präsentation ist zum

Thomas Heigl finished his very interesting diploma thesis dealing with special aspects of information retrieval in the
legal domain. This thesis was done in cooperation with the publisher Linde, an expert in the field. Thomas gives a good
introduction into modern aspects of information retrieval and analyses the "peculiarities" of the legal domain before he
suggests strategies for this particular domain.

[2008-09-30] Student-Thesis: A Comparative Analysis of State-of-the-Art Component Frameworks for the Java Programming Language
Andreas Pieber and Jakob Spoerk wrote a thorough and very good thesis about software components and Java-based component
frameworks. The authors introduce component-based software development, derive criteria to compare frameworks and
eventually discuss OSGi, Spring, J2EE, SCA, and JBI on an individual basis and in connection with each other as some
problems require the combination of several component frameworks.

Endlich bin ich dazu gekommen einige Zitate aus Liessmanns Buch "Theorie der Unbildung" einzugeben und online
zu stellen. Das Buch ist wirklich lesenswert. Liessmann ist ein wunderbarer Autor, der mit einiger Schärfe
aktuelle "Reformen" im Bereich von Universitäten kritisiert und sich weiters mit dem fragwürdigen Begriff der
Wissensgesellschaft auseinandersetzt.

[2008-04-29] Implementing Enterprise Integration Patterns using Open Source Frameworks
Robert Thullner recently finished his master-thesis with the title "Implementing Enterprise Integration Patterns using
Open Source Frameworks". In his thesis he is refering to the EI Patterns described by Hohpe and Woolfe. Robert analyses a
set of leading OS frameworks in this domain (Mule, Apache ActiveMQ, Service Mix and Camel). He defines a set of scenarios
that are implemented with various (combinations) of technologies to evaluate and demonstrate the capabilities of the
specific technology or mix of technologies. Finally he categorises the frameworks and gives hints on implementation
best-practices.

[2008-03-28] Nachhaltige IT: Veranstaltung im Rahmen der OCG
Angesichts der massiven Herausforderungen, der wir als Gesellschaft in Form von Energiekrise und Klimawandel (sowie
anderen Problemen die auf mangelnde Nachhaltigkeit zurückzuführen sind) gegenüberstehen, habe ich mich entschlossen, eine
Neuorientierung des Open Source Arbeitskreises der OCG vorzuschlagen und den Arbeitskreis um die Thematik "Nachhaltigkeit
und IT" zu fokussieren. In diesem Konzept findet eine Veranstaltung in der OCG statt, in dem ich mich auch auf zwei
Gastvortragende freue: DI Schmoll vom Umweltbundesamt "Green IT---Nur ein Marketingschlagwort?" und DI Meixner (IBM)

[2008-03-12] Neue Diplomarbeitsthemen
Es gibt ein neues Diplomarbeitsthema, das sich mit den Möglichkeiten auseinandersetzt, die wir als Softwareentwickler
haben um Anwendungen (Server, Client) effizienter und leistungsfähiger und damit "ökologischer" zu gestalten.
Softwareentwicklung hat in der Vergangenheit oft unter dem Druck schnelle Lösungen zu bieten die Effizienz ausser Acht
gelassen. "Ein weiterer Server wird das Problem schon lösen" war eine gängige Annahme. Dies sollte nicht der Weg der
Zukunft sein, v.a. nicht im Sinne der Probleme vor der wir durch wachsenden Resourcenmangel und Klimawandel stehen. Wege
Effizienz und Energieverbrauch in komplexen Anwendungen zu messen, sowie geeignete Strategien diesen zu minimieren
stellen die Herausforderung dieser Arbeiten dar.

[2008-03-02] Software-Engineeing Sommersemester!
Das Sommersemester beginnt und ich freue mich schon auf die nächste Softwareengineering und Projektmanagement Runde. Ich habe
meine Hausaufgaben auch schon größtenteils erledigt. Für meinen Teil der Vorlesung/Übung gibt es eine Reihe an enhanced Podcasts
für die "Basisinformation". In den Vorlesungen werden wir anhand von praktischen Beispielen dann die dort im Selbststudium
erarbeiteten Inhalte vertiefen. Natürlich sind die Podcasts für alle zugänglich, nicht nur für Studenten meiner Vorlesungen. Es
sind zur Zeit die ersten vier Vorlesungsteile online, die restlichen drei werden in den nächsten Tagen folgen.
